Who this is for (and who it’s not)

Fast self-check so you book the right thing.

This is for you if you:

  • want consistent sunrise/sunset results, not random “lucky” frames
  • want long exposures that are sharp, clean, and intentional
  • want a night workflow you can repeat at home (conditions permitting)
  • prefer small groups and direct coaching over a big tour

Not a fit if you:

  • need guaranteed astro outcomes (we teach technique; skies decide)
  • can’t manage uneven sand/rocks or short walks with a camera bag
  • want a slow sightseeing itinerary (this is tuition-led and time-based)
  • plan to fly drones as part of the workshop (not included)

1
Day 1: Coast foundations

Sunrise: seascape basics, sharpness checks, shutter control.
Afternoon: planning tools + composition structure.
Sunset/blue hour: exposure transitions and clean colour.

2

3
Day 3: Night option + polish

Sunrise: your strongest repeat (apply feedback).
Editing guidance: selection and finishing workflow.
Night: technique session (conditions and access permitting) or a coastal alternative.

Final meet points and timings are confirmed in your pre-workshop info. Access rules can change, so always verify official sources and follow signage and on-site guidance.

Locations and access approach

We use a small set of reliable Sunshine Coast locations and pick the safest, best-light option each session.

  • Point Cartwright: first-light structure, leading lines, wave timing, blue hour.
  • Point Arkwright: elevated headland frames and clean sunrise/sunset angles.
  • Coolum bays: sheltered compositions when open beaches are messy.
  • Buderim Falls: waterfall shutter control and safer mid-day shooting.
  • Wild Horse Mountain area: layered landscapes and night concepts (conditions permitting).
  • Pincushion Island area: silhouettes and reflective water options (conditions permitting).

How we choose locations (simple and honest)

  • We plan around tide/swell/wind and choose safe angles first.
  • We adapt the location to the light (not the other way around).
  • We keep it calm and clear: you’ll know where to meet and what to bring.
  • Always verify official sources and follow signage and on-site guidance.

Safety, fitness and night notes

Coastal shooting is conditions-led. Safety and responsible access come first.

  • Expect short walks and some uneven sand/rock platforms.
  • Closed shoes with grip are non-negotiable near headlands.
  • Bring a headlamp/torch for early starts and low light.
  • If swell is up, we shoot a safer angle or switch locations.
  • Night sessions are conditions permitting and access permitting.
  • If night access isn’t suitable, we run a coastal alternative or add more sunrise/sunset + editing guidance.
  • Permits/permissions where required. Follow signage and on-site guidance.
  • $20M public liability insurance (details available on request).

Not a fit if you can’t manage uneven surfaces in low light, or if you want guaranteed astro results.

Gear (essentials vs optional)

You don’t need exotic gear. You do need a stable setup and the right basics.

Essentials

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls
  • Wide lens (ideal), plus any standard zoom you already own
  • Solid tripod (this matters more than people think)
  • Headlamp/torch + spare batteries
  • Closed shoes with grip, layers for coastal wind, light rain cover

If you’re unsure what you have, join the list and you can reply with your kit for guidance.

Optional (nice to have)

  • ND filter(s) for longer exposures (helpful, not required)
  • Cable release/remote (not required)
  • Spare batteries + power bank
  • Laptop for editing guidance (recommended, not mandatory)

Editing guidance is Lightroom Classic + Photoshop friendly. If you use other software, the workflow principles still apply.

Conditions plan (Plan B)

You’re not paying for luck. You’re paying for decisions that keep outcomes strong.

If swell/wind makes headlands unsafe

  • We switch to sheltered bays or elevated viewpoints.
  • We adjust timing so you still shoot the best available light.

Success still looks like: sharp files, controlled motion, and strong composition structure.

If cloud blocks night sky

  • We teach night technique where it’s productive and safe, or move to a coastal alternative.
  • We add more sunrise/sunset time and editing guidance so you still level up.

Success still looks like: a repeatable night workflow, even if the sky doesn’t cooperate.

Access rules and conditions can change. Always verify official sources and follow signage and on-site guidance.

FAQs

Direct answers before you join a Sunshine Coast photography workshop.

Is this Sunshine Coast photography workshop suitable for beginners?
Yes. Keen beginners are welcome. If you can (or want to) change ISO, aperture and shutter speed, we’ll build your workflow step by step. Advanced photographers get coaching on refinement and consistency.
Do I need to know Manual mode?
It helps, but it’s not required. We’ll teach the few settings you need in the field and reinforce them across the three days.
What camera and lenses should I bring?
An interchangeable-lens camera with manual controls is ideal. A wide-angle lens helps for seascapes and low light, plus a standard zoom for versatility. If you only have one lens, bring what you have and we’ll adapt.
Do I need a tripod?
Yes. A sturdy tripod is essential for long exposures and low light. If your tripod is light or shaky, tell us and we’ll suggest simple fixes.
Do I need filters (ND or polariser)?
No. Filters are helpful but not required. You’ll still learn shutter control and clean technique without them. If you already own filters, we’ll show you how to use them properly.
Is night-sky photography included?
We plan a night technique session, but it’s always conditions permitting (cloud, wind, visibility) and access permitting. If it’s not suitable, we replace it with extra sunrise/sunset shooting and editing guidance.
Will we definitely see the Milky Way?
No. It can’t be guaranteed. We teach technique and setup so you can repeat it anywhere, but cloud and haze can block visibility.
How fit do I need to be?
Moderate fitness helps. Expect short walks and uneven ground near coastal platforms. You should be comfortable carrying your kit for 15–30 minutes at a time.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We pivot. Wind and cloud can still produce strong seascapes. If conditions aren’t safe or productive, we switch locations, shift timings, or add more editing/critique time.
Are permits required at these locations?
Permits/permissions are used where required for workshop activity. Access rules can change, so always verify official sources and follow signage and on-site guidance.
Is accommodation included?
No. This is tuition-led, so you choose accommodation to suit your budget and preferred area. You’ll receive planning notes when the intake opens.
Is transport included?
No. You’ll need your own transport to meet at the nominated points. Meeting details are provided when dates open.
Do you teach editing?
Yes, editing guidance is included. We focus on practical steps: selecting your best frames, clean colour, contrast, sharpening and export. The exact edit format is confirmed when dates open.
What’s included in the workshop fee?
Small-group field coaching, conditions-led planning, camera setup help, workflow checklists, and editing guidance. Accommodation, meals and transport are not included.
What’s the cancellation / refund policy?
Cancellation terms are provided with the intake details and again at booking. If you need the policy before committing, reply to the priority list email and we’ll send it.
Are drones part of the workshop?
No. Drones aren’t part of the workshop. If you fly independently outside workshop time, you’re responsible for checking current CASA rules and any local/site restrictions. Rules can change.
Max 4 per intake. Dates and meeting details are released via the priority list.
