Why Tasmania’s East Coast?

Granite boulders painted in bright lichen, turquoise bays, and clean southern light. Bay of Fires excels for sunrise colour and abstract minimalism. Freycinet delivers drama with the Hazards, Sleepy Bay textures, and Wineglass vistas. Skies are dark and February–March favours Milky Way sessions.

Bay of Fires

Binalong Bay, Grants Point, Skeleton Bay. Lichen scenes above the waterline, not tide-dependent. Swell adds energy when present.

Freycinet

Coles Bay foreshore, Sleepy Bay, Bluestone Bay, Friendly Beaches, Wineglass Bay lookout.

Astro Windows

Bortle 1–2 skies. Feb–Mar is prime. Western scenes can include home/street lights for creative contrast.

Connectivity

Surprisingly strong 4G–5G around Coles Bay and access roads. Short black spots in gullies and behind the Hazards.

FAQs

What fitness level is required?
Short walks with moderate inclines on rocky terrain. We pace to the slowest walker and allow frequent breaks.
Is Tasmania’s east coast rainy?
It’s drier than the west coast. Expect some changeable weather and cloud bands. We plan for backup nights and use real-time cloud forecasts.
Is tide important at Bay of Fires?
Most lichen scenes sit above the waterline, so tides are less critical. Swell is the key variable for dynamic seascapes.
Will we do astrophotography?
Yes when skies and permits align. Feb–Mar offers dark skies. Western scenes can include some house and street lights which we can use creatively.
What about reception and power?
Mains power at accommodation. 4G–5G available around Coles Bay and access roads with some short black spots in gullies.
Can beginners join?
Absolutely. We cover manual shooting, exposure bracketing, focus stacking, and a clear editing workflow.
Are drones allowed?
Subject to CASA rules and local restrictions. We review regulations on-site and fly only where permitted and safe.

Testimonials

★★★★★

"Dylan has put a lot of time and effort into this workshop. He is easy to understand and ensures each student gets the time they need to grasp the concepts. I really appreciated that there were only four students—Dylan spent plenty of time with each of us. The follow-up eBooks he created and published are a terrific way to reinforce the weekend and make sure the new techniques and knowledge really stick. Thank you Dylan—I really enjoyed the weekend and can’t wait to see what’s next."
