Itinerary snapshot (example)

Exact locations flex with tide, wind, swell and cloud cover.

Day 1 — Arrival + optional sunset
Moruya Airport (MYA) pickup or self-drive. Check-in and orientation. If conditions allow, we shoot a sunset session to set the baseline workflow.
Day 2 — Sunrise + lab + sunset (+ optional night*)
Sunrise at a Sapphire Coast icon (conditions-based). Editing lab (approx. 3 hours). Sunset session. Optional night session if weather and safe access permit.
Day 3 — Sunrise + lab + sunset (+ optional night*)
Second sunrise rotation for a different tide and swell window. Editing lab (approx. 3 hours). Sunset session. Optional night session if conditions and safe access permit.
Day 4 — Final sunrise + review + departure
Final sunrise session, then a wrap-up edit and review block. Drop-off to MYA or self-drive departure late morning.

*Night sessions: run only when conditions and safe access line up. If the sky is closed in or access isn’t suitable, we use that time for deeper coaching, editing, planning drills and field technique so you still leave with a repeatable process.

What’s included (and what isn’t)

Clear inclusions so there are no surprises.

Included

  • Small-group tuition (max 4)
  • Guided sunrise and sunset sessions (conditions dependent)
  • Optional night sessions when appropriate and safe*
  • Daily Lightroom/Photoshop editing labs
  • Transfers from Moruya Airport (MYA) + local transport during workshop sessions
  • Planning support, checklists and ongoing guidance

We operate with permits and permissions where required and plan around safe access and conditions.

Not included

  • Accommodation (self-book)
  • Meals and drinks
  • Flights to/from Moruya (MYA) if flying in
  • Travel insurance (strongly recommended)

Recommended base: The Anchorage Bermagui (subject to availability and their terms). You can stay elsewhere, but you’ll need to meet at the agreed pickup and meeting points.

Safety, access and fitness (read this)

Coastal platforms can be hazardous. The goal is strong images without pushing luck.

  • Terrain: uneven rocks, wet surfaces, short-to-moderate walks, early starts
  • Ocean risk: swell and rogue sets are real. If access isn’t safe, we move or change plans
  • Night sessions: headlamp required; we keep activity conservative and conditions-led
  • Rules: follow signage and on-site guidance; access rules can change
  • Bring: grippy footwear, warm layer, rain shell, water, and a small towel/microfibre cloth
  • Pace: we shoot as a group; nobody is pressured into risky positions
  • Not a fit if: you’re not comfortable near waves, can’t handle uneven ground, or need late starts
  • Insurance: $20M public liability (details available on request)

Gear (essentials vs optional)

You don’t need a perfect kit. You do need stability and a few basics.

Essentials

  • Interchangeable-lens camera (DSLR/mirrorless)
  • Wide lens (roughly 14–24mm or 16–35mm)
  • Sturdy tripod (recommended for sunrise/sunset and required for long exposures)
  • Remote/intervalometer (useful)
  • Spare battery + microfiber cloth + headlamp

Filters: not required. If you already own ND/CPL filters, bring them. If you don’t, you’ll still get strong results with the workflow we teach.

Optional

  • Mid-range zoom (24–70mm) and/or telephoto for abstracts
  • Fast wide lens for night (if you have one)
  • L-bracket for stability
  • ND/CPL filters (optional)
  • Laptop for labs (recommended)

Editing: Lightroom Classic + Photoshop. Software subscriptions are not included.

Conditions plan (Plan B)

If the “perfect” plan isn’t safe or workable, we pivot fast and still get strong outcomes.

If swell is unsafe

We switch to safer platforms, higher-ground angles, or different locations. Safety comes first, every time.

If cloud blocks night

Cloud can be ideal for seascapes. If night is off the table, we go deeper on editing, blending, planning drills and field technique you can reuse.

If wind is rough

We choose sheltered options and work on stability, sharpness checks, and cleaner data capture.

If access changes

We follow signage and on-site guidance. Access rules can change, so we adapt without forcing it.

How you’ll hear

We confirm the plan before each session. You’ll know where to be, when, and what to bring.

Success still looks like

Stronger field decisions, cleaner files, and a workflow you can repeat on any coastline.

FAQs

Direct answers to the real questions people ask before subscribing for releases.

Is this a Sapphire Coast photography workshop?
Yes. It’s a small-group Sapphire Coast photography workshop based around Bermagui and Narooma, focused on sunrise and sunset seascapes with a strong long-exposure workflow. We use conditions-led planning so you get the best available light windows and safe access each session. Optional night sessions may run when cloud cover, wind, moonlight and visibility line up, and when access is safe and workable. Meet points and the exact plan are confirmed as the dates approach.
Is this workshop beginner-friendly?
Yes. Keen beginners are welcome, and coaching is tailored to your level. If you’re new to exposure basics, we’ll get you set up quickly and build confidence without overwhelming you. If you already shoot confidently, we’ll push into stronger compositions, cleaner technique, and a faster decision-making process in the field. The small group (max 4) keeps it hands-on so you are not waiting around for help.
Do I need to shoot in full Manual mode?
Not on day one. You can shoot in whatever mode you’re most comfortable with. That said, I teach and recommend Manual mode because it gives you more control and consistency when light changes quickly, especially for long exposures and night sessions. We’ll build it step by step, starting from the settings you already understand (ISO, shutter speed, aperture), then moving you into a repeatable Manual workflow that you can use confidently after the workshop.
Will we definitely do night / Milky Way photography?
Night is planned first across DKP workshops, and we schedule around moon phase, darkness windows and Milky Way alignment. Whether we run night sessions is conditions dependent and safety-led, including cloud, wind, visibility and access. If it lines up, we’ll make the most of it. If it does not, you won’t miss the learning. I provide downloadable Milky Way RAW data captured on a clear night so we can still teach settings, workflow, blending and finishing in the editing labs using real files.
What if it’s cloudy, raining, or swell is unsafe?
We treat conditions as part of the craft. Cloud can be ideal for seascapes because it softens contrast and can produce colour and drama at sunrise and sunset. If rain or wind shifts the plan, we adjust timing, choose more protected locations, and focus on technique you can repeat. If swell or ocean conditions make a platform unsafe, we do not push access. We move to higher ground, safer angles, or alternate locations where permitted and safe. If night is blocked, we pivot into labs and deeper coaching, plus Milky Way RAW data for learning outcomes.
What locations do you use on the Sapphire Coast?
We plan around Bermagui and Narooma, with a rotation that typically includes Horse Head Rock, Glasshouse Rocks, Camel Rock and Australia Rock, plus flexible backups such as Mystery Bay and Cuttagee Beach. The exact order depends on tide height, swell direction, wind and safe access on the day. This keeps you shooting in the best available conditions instead of forcing a fixed itinerary. We also follow signage and on-site guidance, and we adapt if access conditions change.
How fit do I need to be?
Expect short-to-moderate walks with uneven ground and rock platforms at times, often in low light around sunrise. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable moving carefully on coastal terrain and carrying your camera kit. We pace to the group and choose safe vantage points based on swell, tide and wind. If a location would require risky access, we change plans rather than pushing it. If you’re unsure, message me and I’ll help you assess it honestly.
Is a tripod required?
For long exposures, yes, a tripod is required. For general sunrise and sunset shooting, it is strongly recommended because stability matters in coastal wind and low light. A solid tripod helps you keep your files sharper, makes composition easier, and supports repeatable technique when conditions are moving fast. If you are unsure what tripod is suitable, send me what you have and I’ll tell you whether it will hold up for long exposures and headland wind.
Are filters required?
No. Filters are optional and not required to get strong results on this workshop. We teach a practical long-exposure workflow that works without filters in lower light, especially at sunrise and sunset. If you already own ND or polariser filters, bring them and we’ll use them when conditions suit. If you are thinking of buying filters, email me first. I can often organise participant pricing through my NiSi reseller access where available, and help you avoid buying the wrong sizes or strengths.
Do I need a laptop for the editing labs?
A laptop is recommended because you’ll get more value editing your own files in real time, but it’s not mandatory. You can watch, take notes, and apply the workflow at home if you prefer. Labs are taught using Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, with a focus on a repeatable process rather than obscure tricks. If you bring a laptop, make sure it can run Lightroom smoothly and that you have enough storage for RAW files. Adobe subscriptions are not included.
Do you teach Lightroom and Photoshop?
Yes. The labs are designed to give you a repeatable workflow that matches what we do in the field. We cover file selection, clean base edits, local adjustments, colour control, and finishing that stays natural. Where relevant, we teach blending or stacking in a practical way so you understand the why and the steps, not just the buttons. If night runs, we’ll cover night-specific workflow too. If it doesn’t, we still teach night editing using downloadable Milky Way RAW data so you learn the full process.
Are airport transfers included?
Yes. Transfers are included from Moruya Airport (MYA) during the workshop schedule, plus local transport during the workshop sessions. Self-drive is also welcome if you prefer your own flexibility. If you are flying, aim to book flights that match the pickup and drop-off windows communicated in your pre-departure info. Timing can shift slightly based on the final group schedule and conditions plan, so avoid very tight connections where possible.
Is accommodation included?
No. Accommodation is self-booked so you can choose your budget and comfort level. We recommend staying close to the base area to make early starts easier and keep transport timing smooth. After booking, you’ll receive guidance on the recommended area and simple planning notes. If you stay outside the suggested base, you may need to meet at agreed meeting points rather than relying on pickups. Accommodation availability can be seasonal, so book early once your workshop is confirmed.
How do I hear about cancellations or future Sapphire Coast dates?
Join the photography newsletter. It’s the first notification list for cancellations and new workshop releases across all locations, including Sapphire Coast. When a spot opens, response windows can be short so we can finalise logistics quickly. If new Sapphire Coast dates are added, newsletter subscribers receive the first email with the details and booking link. Practical updates only, and you can unsubscribe any time with one click.
Who is this not for?
If you need late starts, can’t manage uneven terrain, or you’re uncomfortable around ocean platforms, this won’t be the right fit. We take safety seriously and we do not push risky access, even if it means changing locations. It’s also not ideal if you only want a fixed itinerary regardless of conditions. This workshop is conditions-led, which is exactly how you get the best outcomes on the coast. If you’re unsure, email me and I’ll help you decide quickly and honestly.
