Tasmania East Coast Photography Workshop (TAS) – Priority List
Built for photographers who want stronger coastal landscapes: lichen-covered granite at first light, turquoise bays, long-exposure water, and the Hazards at sunset. If skies and access align, we’ll add an optional night session (conditions permitting). The route is planned as a loop: Launceston → Bay of Fires → Freycinet → Launceston.
Note: locations and session timing are always subject to conditions, access, approvals and safety. Verify park/access rules with official sources and follow signage and on-site guidance.
Answer-first: This is a small-group Tasmania East Coast photography workshop focused on Bay of Fires and Freycinet (Feb–Mar 2027, details TBC). You’ll shoot sunrise/sunset seascapes, granite/lichen textures, and long exposures with a conditions-led plan. If skies and access allow, we’ll run an optional night technique session (conditions permitting). With max 4 participants, you get calm, hands-on coaching plus structured image review and editing support.
“The small group made it easy to get 1:1 help. Long exposures finally clicked — without guessing.”
“Clear planning, calm coaching, and I left with an editing workflow I can repeat at home.”
Joining the priority list is free and doesn’t obligate you to book. You’ll simply be first to receive confirmed dates, inclusions and any early-bird release.
Workshop snapshot
Short version: plan coastal sessions properly, shoot clean long exposures, then finish files with a workflow you can repeat.
Granite/lichen textures, turquoise bays, surf motion and the Hazards at golden hour.
Composition, exposure, sharpness, filters (optional), and timing with fast 1:1 help (max 4).
Fly Launceston → Bay of Fires → Freycinet → Launceston. We choose sessions based on light, access and safety.
If skies, access and fatigue management line up, we’ll run a night session (conditions permitting).
Why the Tasmania East Coast works for photographers
You get variety without huge driving every day: Bay of Fires colour + Freycinet structure, all in one loop.
- Bay of Fires: lichen-covered granite, simple compositions, and sunrise colour when conditions align.
- Freycinet: the Hazards give clean shapes, scale, and strong sunsets from multiple viewpoints.
- Texture + motion: long exposures are genuinely useful here — not just a gimmick.
- Flexible access: many scenes work from above the waterline, so you’re not relying on one “perfect” tide window.
- Big-shape panoramas: the coast and headlands suit stitching when you capture cleanly.
- Weather variety: cloud bands can improve seascapes; we plan sessions around what’s actually happening.
- Optional night: some areas can be excellent after dark, but we only run it when conditions permit.
- Outcome: you don’t just visit the east coast — you learn how to photograph it.
Access note: specific locations and session timing are always subject to conditions, access, approvals and safety. Verify park/access rules with official sources and follow signage and on-site guidance.
What you’ll learn (and take home)
Repeatable skills for coastal work: planning, clean capture, and editing that matches the scene.
- Seascape composition: foreground logic, edge control, horizon discipline
- Long exposures made simple: shutter targets, wave timing, when filters help (and when they don’t)
- Sharpness on rocks and headlands: tripod discipline, focus checks, wind management
- High contrast sunrise/sunset: exposure decisions you can repeat
- Panorama capture that stitches cleanly (levelling + overlap + consistent settings)
- Image review: why an image works (and what to change next session)
- Editing workflow: believable colour, contrast, local adjustments, finishing without overcooking
- Optional night technique: safe setup + simple focus routine (conditions permitting)
- A practical checklist for future trips (so the process sticks)
- How we choose locations: swell, wind, light direction, access and safety
Planned itinerary (indicative loop)
Structure you can picture now. Exact sessions shift with weather, swell and access.
Day 1 — Fly into Launceston → Bay of Fires + sunset
- Arrive Launceston (recommended: morning/early afternoon)
- Drive to Bay of Fires base area (St Helens / Binalong Bay area, TBC)
- Sunset session on an accessible coastline option (conditions-led)
Day 2 — Bay of Fires sunrise + texture work + sunset
- Sunrise: granite/lichen compositions and clean technique on slippery rock
- Midday rest + quick image review (and filter/technique troubleshooting)
- Sunset: a different aspect for variety (swell/wind dependent)
- Optional night session if skies and access allow (conditions permitting)
Day 3 — Bay of Fires → Freycinet + sunset on the Hazards
- Morning shoot if conditions support it
- Drive to Freycinet base area (Coles Bay area, TBC)
- Sunset + blue hour: Hazards structure and coastal silhouettes (access dependent)
Day 4 — Freycinet options + (optional) Wineglass Bay scenic flight
- Sunrise session (conditions-led)
- Freycinet coast textures / long exposures (swell and access dependent)
- Optional Wineglass Bay scenic flight (weather/operator permitting; extra cost)
- Editing/workflow session to finish your strongest files (time permitting)
Day 5 — Final sunrise → return to Launceston + wrap
- Final sunrise session (your priority technique focus)
- Drive back to Launceston for afternoon flights
- Wrap: next-steps checklist so the gains stick
Reality check: swell, wind and access changes are normal on the coast. The workshop is built so you still get strong work without forcing Plan A.

Safety, fitness & night considerations
Coastal rock is slippery, conditions change fast, and safety calls are conservative. Always.
- Expect early starts, uneven ground, and wet/slippery granite around sea spray.
- We avoid risky waterline positioning and do not chase shots in unsafe swell or wind.
- Bring warm layers: dawn and night can be cold even in warmer months.
- Optional night sessions only run if visibility, access rules, weather and group energy line up (conditions permitting).
- Verify access rules with official sources; follow signage and on-site guidance.
- Some sessions may involve short walks and stairs; we manage pace and choose safer access when needed.
- Drones are not part of the workshop; if you fly independently, check current CASA and site restrictions — rules can change.
Not a fit if you need guaranteed astro, want a “tour bus” schedule, or can’t move confidently on uneven/rocky ground.
Gear (essentials vs optional)
Bring what you have. The priority is stability, clean technique and good decisions.
Camera with manual control, sturdy tripod, wide-to-mid lens, spare batteries, headlamp/torch, microfibre cloth, weather protection (jacket + pack cover), and closed shoes with grip.
Telephoto for compression, polariser for glare/colour control, ND filters for longer shutter speeds, and a laptop for hands-on editing help. Filters are not required.
Editing support uses Lightroom Classic + Photoshop fundamentals. Software subscriptions (if required) are your responsibility.
Plan A / Plan B / Plan C (conditions-led)
Coastal workshops work when you adapt. We choose locations for the best workable results, not a fixed checklist.
Sunrise/sunset seascapes where footing is safe and timing matches light direction. Long exposures and textures are the priority.
We shift to more sheltered coves, higher viewpoints, simpler compositions, and/or longer review/editing blocks to keep results strong.
We change locations, shorten sessions, or pause. You still get coaching and workflow support — we don’t take risks for a shot.
We confirm session plans the day before (and again on the day) based on weather, swell and access. Success still looks like strong images and better technique.

Testimonials
"Dylan has put a lot of time and effort into this workshop. He is easy to understand and ensures each student gets the time they need to grasp the concepts. I really appreciated that there were only four students—Dylan spent plenty of time with each of us. The follow-up eBooks he created and published are a terrific way to reinforce the weekend and make sure the new techniques and knowledge really stick. Thank you Dylan—I really enjoyed the weekend and can’t wait to see what’s next."
