Why this Pinnacles itinerary works

Instead of chasing distance, we build repetition: multiple sessions at the Pinnacles plus nearby coast options. More time shooting, less time driving.

1
Astro-first, without burnout

We plan multiple night attempts when conditions and access allow, with rest and recovery built into the day. Night sessions are opt-in.

2
Minimal driving, maximum reps

Repeat sessions teach adaptation: you learn how to work conditions, not just copy a single composition once.

3
Editing labs are part of the product

When light is harsh, we run structured editing and planning so you leave with finished images and a reusable workflow.

Core locations: The Pinnacles Desert (Nambung National Park) · Hangover Bay · Kangaroo Point.
Supporting options (time/conditions dependent): Lake Thetis and nearby short walks/lookouts close to base.

What you’ll learn

A practical, repeatable process: field decisions + clean files + simple finishing. No fluff.

  • Astro fundamentals (when clear): focus workflow, exposure, clean files, horizon control
  • Nightscape composition: spire placement, scale, foreground simplification
  • Star trails + single-frame nightscapes (star tracker not required)
  • Sunrise/sunset planning: wind direction, cloud breaks, light angles
  • Safe positioning in low light: briefings, movement, and boundaries
  • Landscape composition: structure, separation, leading lines, story sets
  • Coastal long exposures: shutter choice, timing, and avoiding “mud”
  • Lightroom workflow: cull, masks, colour control, sharpening, export
  • Photoshop fundamentals where useful: tidy edges, simple blends, finish
  • A reusable checklist you can apply on future trips

What you’ll leave with

  • A clean astro workflow (focus, exposure, file handling) you can repeat anywhere
  • Finished edits from the week (not just “raw files on a drive”)
  • Your own next-trip checklist: settings, packing, and planning

Gear checklist (simple)

You don’t need exotic gear. You do need the essentials, especially for low light.

Required

  • Camera with Manual mode
  • Sturdy tripod
  • Wide-angle lens
  • Headlamp (pre-dawn + night)
  • Spare batteries + memory cards

Helpful (not mandatory)

  • Fast wide lens (for cleaner astro)
  • Remote shutter / intervalometer
  • ND filters for daytime/coastal long exposures
  • Lens heater / microfibre cloth (condensation control)

Itinerary (5 days)

Structured windows with flexibility inside each day. Exact timing flexes with conditions and safe/practical access.

Day 1 — Perth arrival + orientation + sunset + night option
Meet in Perth (airport), drive to Cervantes, check-in and reset. Short briefing: safety, night workflow, and how the week runs. Sunset at Hangover Bay or Kangaroo Point. Night session attempt only if conditions and practical access allow (otherwise rest).
Day 2 — Pinnacles sunrise + editing lab + sunset + night attempt
Sunrise at The Pinnacles Desert focusing on composition and exposure fundamentals. Midday rest + air-conditioned editing lab (astro workflow foundations and clean files). Sunset at The Pinnacles. Night attempt if conditions and practical access allow.
Day 3 — Coastal sunrise + editing lab + coastal sunset + night option
Sunrise at Kangaroo Point (clean, repeatable coastal compositions). Midday rest + editing lab (seascape workflow: masks, colour control, finishing). Sunset at Hangover Bay (textures and long exposures). Optional night attempt if conditions suit.
Day 4 — Pinnacles mastery day + portfolio review + final night push
Sunrise at The Pinnacles focusing on advanced compositions and storytelling sets. Midday editing lab: building a consistent set + portfolio review. Sunset at the best-conditions location (Pinnacles or coast). Final night push if conditions and practical access allow.
Day 5 — Final sunrise + wrap + return to Perth
Final sunrise at the strongest option for the day. Wrap-up: your next-trip checklist and personal settings guide. Return to Perth for departures.

Fatigue note: night sessions are opt-in. If you’re cooked, you sleep. We prioritise outcomes without grinding people down.

FAQs

Direct answers to the common questions.

Is this an astrophotography workshop or a landscape workshop?
Both. The core subject is The Pinnacles Desert, with sunrise/sunset and nightscape attempts when conditions allow. Coastal sessions provide strong backups and extra variety.
Will we definitely shoot the Milky Way?
No promises. Astro depends on cloud, wind and practical access. We plan for it, but it’s never guaranteed. If skies don’t cooperate, we lean into sunrise/sunset outcomes and deeper editing/coaching.
What happens if it’s cloudy at night?
We pivot to a structured indoor coaching block (editing, planning and technique) and prioritise strong sunrise/sunset sessions so you still leave with a portfolio set.
Are night sessions compulsory?
No. Night sessions are opt-in. If you’re tired, you sleep. The workshop is designed to produce strong results without grinding people down.
Do I need a star tracker?
No. We teach untracked nightscapes and star trails. If you own a tracker, we can help you use it, but it’s not required.
Is this suitable for beginners?
Yes. If you’re willing to learn Manual mode and follow a simple checklist, you’ll be supported. With only 4 participants, coaching is hands-on and tailored.
What lens should I bring for astro at the Pinnacles?
A wide-angle lens is the priority. A faster wide lens is helpful, but not required. We’ll help you get the best result from what you have.
How much driving is involved?
Minimal. This is a one-base retreat with short transfers to The Pinnacles Desert and nearby coastal locations. The goal is more shooting time, less car time.
Do you pick us up from Perth?
Yes. We meet as a group in Perth (airport) and travel together to Cervantes and back at the end.
Are permits and access handled?
We operate with permits/permissions where required and plan around site rules and practical access. If a site is restricted or unsafe, we swap to an alternative nearby.
Are drones allowed?
Drones aren’t part of this workshop. If you fly independently outside workshop time, you’re responsible for checking current CASA rules and any local/site restrictions.
What gear should I bring?
A camera with Manual control, a sturdy tripod, and a wide-angle lens are the essentials. A headlamp is required for pre-dawn and night sessions. We’ll send a simple gear checklist after you join.
What’s the cancellation policy?
Cancellation terms are provided when bookings open. Travel insurance is strongly recommended, especially for flights and personal circumstances.
Seats are capped at 4. Subscribe for first access when bookings open.

"Dylan has put a lot of time and effort into this workshop. He is easy to understand and ensures each student gets the time they need to grasp the concepts. I really appreciated that there were only four students—Dylan spent plenty of time with each of us. Thank you Dylan—I really enjoyed the weekend and can’t wait to see what’s next."
