How I teach

Every photographer who comes on a masterclass has different goals, experience, and confidence levels. The teaching adapts to that.

Some photographers want hands-on help with settings, composition, filter technique, and workflow. Others are more independent — they want access to strong locations, good timing, and a supportive group atmosphere to work within. Both are welcome, and both get what they need.

I don't run rigid, follow-the-leader sessions where everyone stands in the same spot with the same settings. I check in regularly throughout every shoot, answer questions as they come up, and adjust the level of guidance to each person. If you need more time on something, we take it. If you want space to work, you get it.

If the weather turns, we don't stop. The masterclass format exists precisely because SEQ weather is unpredictable — you get multiple sessions and multiple opportunities regardless of what the sky does. Overcast light, stormy seas, flat conditions: all of it has value if you know how to read it. That's part of what you'll learn.

The goal is always the same: make the most of the conditions we have, safely and creatively, and make sure every photographer leaves with stronger images and a clearer process than they arrived with.

Who this is for

  • Beginners to advanced photographers wanting stronger coastal results — not just on perfect days
  • Anyone who's struggled with long exposures, focusing in the dark, or making one session count
  • Photographers who want real editing time, not just field time
  • Locals and visitors who want a complete experience in a single day

Not the right fit if…

  • You need a guaranteed Milky Way — the full setup is taught regardless, but clear skies aren't promised
  • You prefer large group tours over focused, personal instruction
  • You're not comfortable on uneven coastal terrain in low light

What you'll shoot

  • Sunset: golden hour to blue hour seascapes, foreground design, composition, highlight control, and wave timing — ND/GND filter technique covered if you have them
  • Astro (if clear): Milky Way over coastal scenes — focus, exposure, framing, optional stacking
  • If cloudy at night: twilight long exposures and the full astro camera setup so you're ready when skies clear
  • Sunrise: adapting to changing light, silky water, reflections, coastal drama
  • Editing session: Lightroom Classic + Photoshop — tone, colour, noise, blending, and export

What's included

  • 2–3 guided field sessions (sunset, astro window, sunrise)
  • 3-hour editing session — Camera House Maroochydore (SC) or Peregian Beach Community House (Noosa)
  • 75% off The Editing System Behind the Workshop — Dylan's 11-lesson Lightroom + Photoshop bundle (AU$49, normally AU$197)
  • Personalised instruction in a small group — real attention, not a crowd
  • Gear advice before and after the masterclass (free)
  • Access to NiSi filter discounts — Dylan is an authorised NiSi reseller
  • Access to Leofoto tripod discounts — Dylan is an authorised Leofoto reseller
  • Access to Nikon product discounts — Dylan is a Nikon School lecturer
  • Post-workshop editing support

Not included

  • Transport between locations (own vehicle required)
  • Accommodation — your responsibility to arrange and confirm before the masterclass date. Suggested options sent in your welcome email.
  • Meals and personal expenses
  • Adobe subscription (Lightroom / Photoshop)
  • Personal travel insurance (recommended)

Weather + conditions

The 24-hour format was designed specifically for SEQ weather — you get multiple sessions and multiple opportunities regardless of what the sky does.

  • Locations confirmed closer to your date based on conditions, tide, and light
  • Astro session runs if clear; full technique covered either way
  • If swell or wind makes a location unsuitable, we pivot to a safe approved alternative
  • Sessions are not cancelled for overcast skies alone
  • Postponed only if conditions are genuinely unsafe — in which case we reschedule

What past participants say

Real feedback from real workshops.

★★★★★

"Before the workshop, my approach was simple — just take the shot. Now it's all about planning, preparation, and waiting for the light. Understanding light as the most fundamental element of composition was the real revelation, along with the discipline of arriving early to set up properly. The total experience will exceed expectations."

— Jim I. · Sapphire Coast Workshop, March 2026
★★★★★

"I considered myself a capable photographer before the workshop, but it surprised me how much I still had to learn — and how quickly small adjustments improved my results. Dylan challenged me creatively and helped me produce a collection of images I'm truly proud of. You gain so much more than just photos — you leave with practical skills, creative direction, and genuine confidence."

— Rebecca C. · Kiama Workshop, February 2026
★★★★★

"Before the workshop, advanced techniques like exposure blending and shooting full manual felt out of reach. Three days on the Sapphire Coast changed that. I left not just with shots I'm genuinely proud of — particularly nailing slow water — but with a real understanding of why the process works. For anyone at an intermediate level sitting on the fence, I'd say do it."

— Peter J. · Sapphire Coast Workshop, March 2026
★★★★★

"Definitely worth it — expert tuition, incredible locations, and a great group of like-minded photographers in a genuinely fun atmosphere. My photography has noticeably improved since the workshop. I have a much better understanding of both capturing and processing shots. If you're sitting on the fence, just go."

— Ken P. · Kiama Workshop, February 2026
★★★★★

"Dylan brings a depth of knowledge and experience that's rare — but what sets him apart is his genuine willingness to share all of it. I learned an enormous amount over the workshop, yet never once felt overwhelmed. The pace was right, the instruction was clear, and every concept built on the last. I'd recommend this without hesitation and would sign up for another workshop in a heartbeat."

— Lyn A. · Noosa National Park Workshop, January 2026
★★★★★

"I've done quite a few workshops with Dylan now, and I keep coming back for good reason. The planning that goes into finding the right locations at the right time for the best light is exceptional — nothing is left to chance. And the Milky Way sessions? Absolutely fantastic. Dylan sets the bar high and consistently clears it."

Why this format

South-east Queensland weather is unpredictable. The masterclass format was built around that reality — not against it.

  • If astro clouds over, the full setup and process is still covered
  • Dates selected around new moon windows for the best possible dark skies
  • Overcast or stormy conditions create their own opportunities — we use them

FAQs

Direct answers before you book.

How much does it cost? +
AU$299 full payment at time of booking. No deposit, no split — one payment and you're in.
What's the difference between the Sunshine Coast and Noosa sessions? +
The format, inclusions, price, and teaching approach are identical. The only difference is location. Sunshine Coast sessions use permitted locations across Point Cartwright, Point Arkwright, Coolum, and surrounds, with editing at Camera House Maroochydore. Noosa sessions use Granite Bay, Dolphin Point, Hell's Gates, Tea Tree Bay, and Alexandria Beach/Headland, with editing at Peregian Beach Community House. Pick whichever suits your schedule or location preference.
What's included after the masterclass? +
Post-workshop gear advice (free), access to NiSi, Leofoto, and Nikon discounts, ongoing editing support, and 75% off The Editing System Behind the Workshop — Dylan's 11-lesson Lightroom + Photoshop bundle (AU$49, normally AU$197) — to keep refining the workflow at home.
Can I pay in instalments? +
Payment plans are available on request — just get in touch before booking.
What experience level do I need? +
Keen beginners through to advanced photographers are welcome. Manual mode is strongly recommended so you get the most from the field sessions. Teaching is adapted to your level — if you need more time on fundamentals, we go there. If you're experienced and want space to work, you get it.
Is astrophotography guaranteed? +
The astro session runs if skies are clear. Dates are selected around new moon windows for the best possible conditions. If it clouds over, the full astro camera setup and twilight long exposures are covered instead — so you leave with the full process, not just a lucky clear-night shot.
What if the weather is bad? +
The 24-hour format exists specifically because SEQ weather is unpredictable. Overcast skies don't cancel anything — locations and techniques adapt to conditions. Sessions are only postponed if conditions are genuinely unsafe (lightning, extreme wind or swell). If that happens, we reschedule.
Do I need to arrange my own accommodation? +
Yes — accommodation is your responsibility to arrange and confirm before your masterclass date. Suggested options for both Sunshine Coast and Noosa are included in your welcome email after booking.
Do I need my own transport? +
Yes — own vehicle required to travel between locations. Meeting points for each session are confirmed in your welcome email.
What's the cancellation and refund policy? +
72+ hours before: full refund
Within 72 hours: no refund
ACL rights apply regardless.
