How it works · What's included · FAQs

Two full days. One complete field-to-edit workflow.

This is not a photo tour and it is not two days of collecting RAW files to deal with later. You plan the frame, make the technical and creative decisions in the field, review what worked, and carry your own images through to a finished edit. Then you repeat the process while the learning is still live.

The method

Learn the whole process, not isolated camera settings

Every session feeds the next. The aim is not just to help you produce strong images during one weekend. It is to build a workflow you can repeat independently in unfamiliar locations and changing conditions.

01
Plan

Read the location, light, weather, tide, moon and likely composition before the camera comes out.

02
Capture

Make deliberate choices around composition, exposure, focus, filters, timing and foreground strategy.

03
Edit

Select the right frame and build a clean Lightroom and Photoshop workflow around your own files.

04
Repeat

Apply the feedback at the next session so the improvement is tested in the field, not left as theory.

How it runs

Two full days built around the strongest light

The usual format is Friday and Saturday. Exact locations and timing flex around seasonal light, tides, weather, Milky Way alignment, permit conditions and the group's energy. The framework is fixed; the order is not.

Day 1 · Friday

Capture, review and refine

The first day establishes the workflow and gives us enough time to apply it again under different light.

  • Possible early-Friday astro window from 12:01 am when it is clearly the strongest option
  • Sunrise or morning field session
  • Breakfast and recovery break
  • Three-hour face-to-face Lightroom and Photoshop editing block in a comfortable, air-conditioned indoor venue
  • Protected midday rest and evening planning
  • Sunset field session, with astro afterwards only when selected as the best window
Day 2 · Saturday

Apply the feedback and finish strong

The second day is where the learning locks in. You return to the field with specific corrections from the first day's images.

  • Sunrise or morning field session
  • Breakfast and recovery break
  • Second three-hour face-to-face Lightroom and Photoshop editing and critique block in a comfortable, air-conditioned indoor venue
  • Protected midday rest
  • Final sunset field session
  • Saturday astro when it is the strongest seasonal and weather window
Weather resilience

Up to three possible night-sky windows. One selected session.

One conditions-led night-sky session is selected from up to three possible windows, if clear conditions allow. During Galactic Core season, the session targets the Milky Way Core when alignment and conditions suit. Outside core season, it shifts to seasonal subjects such as Orion, the anticentre Milky Way, star trails or tracked nightscapes. The final window is chosen around sky alignment, cloud forecast, moon, location and participant fatigue.

1
Early Friday From 12:01 am Friday, practically Thursday night for travel and accommodation planning
2
Friday evening After sunset when the alignment and forecast favour the first evening
3
Saturday evening After the final sunset when the second evening provides the strongest opportunity

We use the best window, not all three. If an early-Friday session is selected, the following program and rest periods are adjusted so the group is not simply pushed through a stacked schedule. The night-sky session remains conditions-dependent and is never guaranteed.

The real differentiator

You do not go home with a folder of problems.

Editing is built into both days through two face-to-face three-hour Lightroom and Photoshop blocks held in comfortable, air-conditioned indoor venues. You work on your own images while the location, light and decisions are still fresh, with the process demonstrated live and direct feedback as you apply it. You also take home the complete 11-video DKP Editing System, covering the workflow from basic foundations through to advanced editing, so you can repeat the process after the workshop.

Editing covers

  • Choosing the strongest frame instead of editing everything
  • RAW preparation and an efficient Lightroom starting point
  • Local adjustments, colour, contrast and tonal control
  • Photoshop workflow where the image requires it
  • Seascape, waterfall, landscape and astro-specific decisions
  • Finishing for screen, print and portfolio use
  • Ongoing access to the 11-video DKP Editing System, from basic to advanced editing
Rotating editions

One proven format. Different Southeast Queensland conditions.

The Field-to-Edit Intensive is the stable product. The location and dominant photographic focus rotate so each date can use the strongest seasonal conditions, approved access and night-sky alignment. Exact inclusions are listed on each date before you book.

01
Coast & Seascapes

Sunrise and sunset light, wave timing, filters, foreground control, exposure blending and coastal safety.

02
Peaks & Rainforest

Weekday-access mountain and waterfall options, telephoto compression, polariser work and complex natural light.

03
Coast & Dark Sky

Daylight composition carried into night, reliable focus and exposure, foreground strategy, and processing for the Milky Way Core or other seasonal night-sky subjects.

What you'll come home with

  • A repeatable process for planning, capturing and finishing landscape images
  • Stronger composition and a clearer reason behind every technical choice
  • A practical Lightroom and Photoshop workflow built on your own files
  • Direct feedback on the habits currently limiting your images
  • Greater confidence adapting when the forecast or location changes
  • A small set of properly developed images rather than a hard drive full of unfinished RAW files

Who this is for

  • Keen beginners through to experienced photographers refining their complete workflow
  • Photographers who want hands-on coaching, not a large group or passive demonstration
  • Anyone serious enough to work through early starts, field decisions and editing
  • People who want to understand the process so they can repeat it without Dylan beside them

Not a fit if…

  • You want a casual guided tour with the camera set up for you
  • You expect fixed weather, guaranteed astro or a rigid itinerary regardless of conditions
  • You do not want to bring a laptop or take part in the editing process

“Before the workshop, my approach was simple — just take the shot. Now it's all about planning, preparation and waiting for the light. Understanding light as the most fundamental element of composition was the real revelation.”

FAQs

Direct answers before you book.

Is this a two-day or three-day workshop?
It is two full workshop days, usually Friday and Saturday. An early astro session may begin from 12:01 am Friday when that is the strongest available night window, but the workshop is not sold as a three-day or two-night package. Accommodation and travel around the workshop are self-managed.
Does the early-Friday astro window mean we shoot all night and continue without rest?
No. The early-Friday, Friday-evening and Saturday-evening windows are alternatives, not three promised sessions. We select the strongest window based on seasonal sky alignment and the current forecast. If the early-Friday window is used, the following session timing and recovery periods are adjusted rather than stacking every possible shoot on top of it.
What will we photograph during the night-sky session?
The target changes with the season. During Galactic Core season, we target the Milky Way Core when alignment and conditions suit. Outside core season, we may work with Orion, the anticentre Milky Way, star trails or tracked nightscapes. Clear sky cannot be guaranteed. The format gives us up to three possible windows, materially improving flexibility, but cloud, smoke, rain or unsafe access may still block all of them. When the field session cannot run, the night workflow can still be taught using suitable RAW files so the technical and editing learning is not lost.
Why does the workshop usually run Friday and Saturday?
Friday allows access to selected weekday-restricted national-park and hinterland locations. Finishing Saturday night also leaves Sunday free for participants to sleep, travel home and prepare for work on Monday. Coastal editions may occasionally run Saturday and Sunday when weekday access is not required.
How is this different from the four-day Sunshine Coast workshop?
The intensive is a compact, self-drive two-day teaching format focused on repeating the field-to-edit cycle. The four-day workshop is a broader immersive product with more environments, more field time, additional editing depth and a longer regional experience. At AU$1,250 for two days and AU$2,950 for four days, the pricing remains coherent; the choice is about scope and time, not one product making the other look poor value.
Is the itinerary fixed?
No, deliberately. The exact location order is chosen around weather, light, tide, swell, seasonal night-sky alignment, permit conditions, safety and fatigue. The promised teaching framework remains consistent: field capture, structured editing, feedback and another opportunity to apply it.
How much editing is included?
The workshop includes two face-to-face three-hour Lightroom and Photoshop editing blocks, held in comfortable, air-conditioned indoor venues. You work on your own images while the process is demonstrated live, with direct feedback as you apply it. You also receive the complete 11-video DKP Editing System, covering the workflow from basic foundations through to advanced editing, so you can revisit and repeat the process at home. Editing is not an optional add-on; it is a core part of the workshop.
Do you take the photograph or set the camera up for me?
No. Dylan coaches you through the location, composition, focus, exposure and timing decisions, but you make the frame. The goal is that the understanding and the final image are genuinely yours, and that you can repeat the process later without assistance.
Do I need to be advanced or know manual mode?
You do not need to be advanced. Keen beginners through to experienced photographers are welcome, and the maximum group of four allows the coaching to adapt. Basic familiarity with your camera helps, but the workshop establishes a simple repeatable manual approach early and builds from there.
Is accommodation or transport included?
No. This is tuition-only. Participants self-drive to clearly supplied meeting points and book accommodation if their travel requires it. A Friday start may mean arriving Thursday, especially if the early-Friday astro window is activated. The exact logistics are provided with each date.
What if the weather is poor?
The workshop works with the conditions rather than pretending they do not exist. Cloud can strengthen coastal and mountain light; rain may favour rainforest and waterfall work; unsafe swell or wind triggers a location change. Conditions updates are sent before the workshop and every session has a practical Plan A and Plan B.
Are permits and insurance in place?
Yes. Each edition operates only at locations covered by the relevant approval or where commercial activity is otherwise permitted. Dylan Knight Photography holds AU$20 million public liability insurance. The exact location pool is checked against current permit conditions before dates are released.
