Gold Coast Hinterland Photography Workshop (August 2026)
Five days shooting waterfalls, rainforest, seascapes, and the Milky Way โ three completely different disciplines in one trip. Hands-on coaching across all of it, in a group of four.
You'll get hands-on coaching across all of it and leave knowing how to set up, dial in your settings, and frame a shot with confidence โ across three completely different disciplines.
Session timing and exact sites are aligned to access rules, permits, and conditions on the day.
Milky Way
Planned around the best workable night at Mount Barney. Settings, focus routine, and full processing workflow.
Waterfalls
Lamington and Springbrook rainforest. Polariser technique, long-exposure control, and reading light in a closed canopy.
Seascapes
Fingal Causeway at sunrise and sunset. Tide reading, composition, and exposure for moving water.
Who this is for
- All skill levels welcome โ beginner through to advanced. Coaching adapts to where you are and what you need
- Anyone who wants one trip that covers three completely different disciplines โ astro, waterfalls, and coast

Not the right fit ifโฆ
- You want guaranteed astro regardless of cloud, wind, or moonlight
- You don't want to use a tripod or learn manual settings
- You need fully included accommodation and transfers
What you'll shoot and learn
- Milky Way: Planning, camera setup, focus routine, settings, and full post-processing from RAW
- Lamington waterfalls: Rainforest flow, polariser technique, long-exposure control in low light
- Springbrook waterfalls: Purling Brook Lookout, Twin Falls circuit, and Goomoolahra Falls โ afternoon rainforest light, multi-exposure technique, and shooting behind falling water
- Fingal seascapes: Sunrise and sunset, tide reading, and composition for moving water
- Editing blocks: Lightroom and Photoshop workflow across all three disciplines โ culling, masking, finishing
What you'll take home
- A repeatable shooting process for astro, waterfall, and seascape work
- An edit workflow you can apply to your own files straight away
- A take-home practice plan so the improvement continues after the trip

What if astro doesn't cooperate?
The Milky Way session is planned around the best available night across the five days. August is one of the strongest months for the Milky Way core in south-east Queensland.
If cloud blocks the session, you still cover the complete Milky Way workflow โ planning, settings, focus routine, and full processing โ using provided RAW files in the editing blocks. You leave with the full process regardless.
What past participants say
Real feedback from real workshops.
"One of the best photography learning experiences I have undertaken. Dylan is a great communicator โ with only four participants you get quality individual attention. He is very generous in sharing his extensive knowledge and would spend extra time to ensure good understanding of the camera and post-processing. I was extremely impressed with both Dylan and the course structure."
"Dylan brings a depth of knowledge and experience that's rare โ but what sets him apart is his genuine willingness to share all of it. I learned an enormous amount over the workshop, yet never once felt overwhelmed. The pace was right, the instruction was clear, and every concept built on the last. I'd recommend this without hesitation and would sign up for another workshop in a heartbeat."
"Before the workshop, my approach was simple โ just take the shot. Now it's all about planning, preparation, and waiting for the light. Understanding light as the most fundamental element of composition was the real revelation, along with the discipline of arriving early to set up properly. The total experience will exceed expectations."
Day by day
Five focused days. Three disciplines. Mountain, rainforest, waterfall, and coast.
Mount Barney โ arrival, Yellow Pinch Lookout sunset, and night session
Meet at the Mount Barney Lodge from 2pm. Orientation and gear check, then we head out for sunset at Yellow Pinch Lookout. If the sky cooperates, we move into a Milky Way session from the same area โ tonight is the priority night for astro across the five days.
Mount Barney area โ self-bookedMount Barney sunrise + editing block + move to Lamington
Sunrise session at Mount Barney, then a practical Lightroom and Photoshop editing block to work through what you shot the day before. Drive to the Lamington area in the afternoon and check in to O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat. Evening sunset session at Moran's Falls Lookout, with a potential astro session at Kamarun Lookout if conditions allow and permits are confirmed.
O'Reilly's / Lamington โ self-bookedRest morning + editing block + Elabana Falls + Box Forest Circuit
A 9โ12pm editing and review session โ sleep in, recover, and work on images from the first two days. At midday we step off into the rainforest for Elabana Falls and the Box Forest Circuit: approximately 12km return on formed but uneven, often wet tracks with a steady pace. This is the hero waterfall day. Dinner back at O'Reilly's, then optional astro or rest depending on conditions and energy.
O'Reilly's / Lamington โ self-bookedMorning transfer to Gold Coast + Rydges editing block + Springbrook waterfalls + Fingal sunset
Drive to the Gold Coast and check in to the Rydges Hotel. A 9amโ12pm editing block in the conference room โ large screen, proper setup. Lunch, then we head up to Springbrook National Park in the afternoon โ Purling Brook Lookout, Twin Falls circuit, and Goomoolahra Falls if the group has the legs for it. Back to the coast for sunset at Fingal Causeway.
Rydges Gold Coast โ self-bookedFingal Causeway sunrise + breakfast + wrap
Pre-dawn at Fingal Causeway for sunrise. Breakfast together, then a final debrief and your take-home practice plan. Depart when you're ready โ usually mid-morning.
Planned locations
- Yellow Pinch Lookout and Mount Barney area (sunset, astro, sunrise)
- Moran's Falls Lookout, Lamington NP (sunset seascape session)
- Kamarun Lookout, Lamington NP (astro โ subject to conditions and permit confirmation)
- Elabana Falls + Box Forest Circuit, Lamington NP (hero waterfall day, ~12km return)
- Purling Brook Lookout, Twin Falls circuit, and Goomoolahra Falls, Springbrook NP (afternoon waterfall session โ subject to permit confirmation)
- Fingal Causeway (sunset and sunrise seascapes)
Exact sites confirmed close to the date based on access rules, permits, and conditions.
Gear expectations
- Mirrorless or DSLR with manual controls
- Ideal range: 14โ24mm for astro and seascapes; a 24โ70mm or longer helps across mountain ranges and rainforest
- Sturdy tripod โ non-negotiable for long exposure work
- Polariser โ strongly recommended for waterfalls
- Headtorch and spare batteries for pre-dawn and night work
- Laptop โ required for editing blocks (Lightroom/Photoshop taught)
- Solid footwear โ uneven, wet rainforest tracks on Days 3 and 4
Weather + conditions
Rain can improve waterfalls. Cloud can soften coastal contrast. August is historically one of the drier, clearer months in south-east Queensland โ good for astro and coast. If a plan needs to shift, we adjust timing or location and keep shooting. There's always a strong session to be had.
Permits + access
- All commercial permits and permissions handled where required
- Lamington NP access on formed tracks only โ off-track walking not permitted
- Springbrook NP sessions subject to current permit approval
- Access rules checked close to the date
- Drones are not part of the workshop program
- Night sessions only where safe and permitted
