Who this workshop is for

A quick check so you book the right fit (and don't get surprised).

Great fit if you…

  • Want hands-on coaching in a max 3 group.
  • Want waterfalls + coast + astro-first night technique in one trip.
  • Are happy to shoot early/late for good light, then edit during the day.
  • Want a repeatable workflow, not just "nice spots".

May not suit if you…

  • Don't want to use a tripod or learn manual settings.
  • Aren't comfortable on uneven rainforest tracks (Lamington isn't flat).
  • Don't want to do editing sessions (laptop required).
  • Need fully catered accommodation (most nights are self-booked).

What happens after you book

Simple steps, so you know exactly what's next.

1
Confirm + quick questionnaire

You'll receive confirmation and a short questionnaire (gear, experience, goals) so coaching is tailored from day one.

2
Accommodation options

We'll send recommended areas/options for Lamington + the coast so you can book what suits your budget and comfort level.

3
Prep pack

You'll get meeting times, a packing list, and simple notes to set up for editing sessions.

4
Final confirmation

Closer to the date, we confirm meeting points and timing based on conditions, access and safe footing.

Why this Gold Coast itinerary works

Winter clarity, strong variety (mountains, rainforest and coast), and a schedule designed to reduce "drive all day" fatigue.

1
Mountains for astro-first night technique

We prioritise astrophotography and plan around moon phase and Milky Way alignment, then choose the best safe, accessible options on the night based on conditions and location.

2
Lamington waterfalls

Rainforest flow, polariser technique, and long-exposure control without turning your files to mush.

3
Coast to finish strong

Currumbin and Fingal for sunrise/sunset seascapes, patterns, and tide-timed decisions.

What you'll learn

Practical fieldcraft + editing, explained step by step.

  • Night setup: a repeatable focus routine, exposure intent, and clean files (conditions permitting)
  • Milky Way planning using PhotoPills and sky apps (e.g. Sky Guide / Stellarium)
  • Using a star tracker (loaner available) and stacking basics for noise control
  • Waterfalls: polariser use, shutter choices, and composition in rainforest clutter
  • Seascapes: wave timing, long exposures, and tide-aware positioning
  • Lightroom + Photoshop: culling, masking, blending where appropriate, and clean finishing
  • Colour control: keeping greens natural and skies believable
  • Sharpness/focus checks that actually work in wind and spray
  • If skies don't cooperate: we still teach the full astro workflow using downloadable Milky Way RAW data captured on a clear night, so you can practise settings, workflow and blending in the editing sessions.
  • A personal checklist you can reuse on future trips

Editing session requirements

Fitness and access

What to expect at Lamington (and how we manage conditions).

Lamington locations involve walking on uneven rainforest tracks and steps, often damp or slippery. You don't need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking for extended periods at a steady pace. We adjust locations and timing based on conditions, track access and safe footing, and we follow on-site guidance.

Itinerary (5 days)

Exact timing flexes with conditions. We prioritise safe access and the best light.

Day 1 — Mount Barney (arrival + sunset + night option)
BNE pickup (arrive before 12pm) → travel to Mt Barney Lodge. Orientation + gear setup. Sunset session, then astro-first night technique if conditions and safe access allow. Accommodation included (shared) at Mt Barney lodge.
Day 2 — Mount Barney sunrise + editing session + move to Lamington (self-booked accommodation)
Sunrise session, then an editing session (2–3 hours). Travel to Lamington area. Afternoon rainforest session. Lamington accommodation is self-booked.
Day 3 — Lamington hike day (waterfalls + rainforest)
Track day to key falls and rainforest scenes. Expect a moderate walk (often up to ~8 km return depending on route and conditions). We pace to the group, break often, and adjust if needed.
Day 4 — Editing session + coast transfer (self-booked accommodation)
Editing session (approx. 3 hours), then transfer to the coast. Sunset session (location chosen by tide/wind/swell). Coast accommodation is self-booked.
Day 5 — Sunrise + departure
Sunrise at Fingal Causeway or Currumbin (rotate based on tide and conditions). Debrief. Depart to BNE (book flights 1pm or later).

FAQs

Direct answers to the common booking questions.

Is accommodation included?
Only the Mount Barney lodge night is included (shared accommodation due to the remote lodge setup). Accommodation for Lamington and the Gold Coast coast is self-booked at this stage so you can choose budget and comfort level. After booking, you’ll receive recommended areas and options to make early starts and transport timing simple.
Is this suitable for beginners?
Yes. Keen beginners are welcome. We can start in Aperture Priority if needed and build into Manual mode for more control and consistency. Coaching is tailored to your level, and with a maximum of three participants you get hands-on help in the field plus practical feedback during the editing sessions.
Will we definitely shoot the Milky Way?
Astrophotography is the priority and is planned around moon phase and Milky Way alignment, but it is always conditions dependent (cloud, wind, moonlight and safe access), where permitted and safe. If skies do not cooperate, you still learn the full workflow. I provide downloadable Milky Way RAW data captured on a clear night so we can teach settings, workflow and blending in the editing sessions.
Do I need to bring a laptop?
Yes. Editing sessions are taught using Lightroom and or Photoshop, so please bring a laptop capable of running them, plus a card reader and spare storage. If you do not use Adobe, you can still attend and follow along, but demonstrations are shown in Lightroom and Photoshop.
How fit do I need to be for Lamington?
Expect a moderate hike day, often up to around 8 km return depending on route and conditions. Uneven tracks and steps are normal. We pace to the slowest walker, take breaks, and adjust the plan if needed. The goal is strong images without pushing beyond safe or sensible access.
What camera gear should I bring?
A camera with Manual control, a sturdy tripod, and a wide lens are the basics. A polariser is strongly recommended for waterfalls. ND filters can be helpful for seascapes but are not mandatory. If you are looking at new filters or a tripod, email me and I can organise free custom NiSi filter quotes and Leofoto quotes for your exact requirements. You can also see what I am currently shooting with here: https://dylanknight.com.au/mygearlist.
Do you teach Lightroom and Photoshop?
Yes. Editing sessions cover a repeatable workflow: selection, core adjustments, masking, blending and stacking where relevant, and exporting for web and print. If astro is blocked by conditions, we still run the full Milky Way workflow using downloadable RAW data captured on a clear night, so you can practise the complete process from settings through to finishing.
Are airport transfers included?
Yes, complimentary BNE pickup and drop-off is included for the group schedule. Please arrive before 12:00pm on Day 1 and book departure flights 1:00pm or later on Day 5. Final meet points and timing are confirmed prior to the workshop.
What happens if the weather is poor?
We work with conditions rather than against them. Rain can be ideal for waterfalls, adding flow and mood, and cloud can create softer light and better contrast on the coast. If swell or access is unsafe, we pivot to safer locations and angles instead of forcing it. If cloud blocks astro, we still teach the full workflow using downloadable Milky Way RAW data captured on a clear night, and put extra time into coaching and editing sessions so you leave with real progress.
Are permits and insurance in place?
We operate with permits and permissions where required and follow documented safety practices. Dylan Knight Photography holds $20M public liability insurance (details available on request). Access rules can change, so we follow current signage and on-site guidance and adjust plans where necessary.
Are drones allowed?
Drones are not part of this workshop. If you fly independently outside workshop time, you are responsible for checking current CASA rules and any local or site restrictions (including parks and council-managed areas). Rules can change, so always verify before flying.
Where are the Gold Coast workshops located?
We cover four key areas: Mount Barney (astro-first night technique, around 90 minutes west of the Gold Coast), Lamington National Park (rainforest waterfalls and hinterland), Currumbin (sunrise seascapes), and Fingal Causeway (basalt columns near the Northern NSW border). Locations are selected session by session based on conditions and safe access, where permitted and safe.
How do I hear about cancellations or future dates?
Subscribe to the photography newsletter for workshop releases, including cancellations and future dates across all locations. The signup link is https://dylanknight.com.au/photography-newsletter.
What's your cancellation policy?
Please refer to the site cancellation policy and terms before booking so you understand payment timelines and refund conditions. If you are unsure, email before you commit and I will help you make the right call. Travel insurance is strongly recommended.
Accommodation is mostly self-booked (Lamington + coast). Mount Barney lodge night is included (shared). For cancellations and future releases, subscribe for workshop releases.
