Why Lake Weyba
- Wide, unobstructed eastern horizon for rich dawn colour.
- Shallow water for safe, knee-deep perspectives and clean reflections.
- Paperbark silhouettes for leading lines and negative space.
Astro Windows
Best when the core sits low before astronomical twilight — typically Feb–Jul. Later in winter the core is too high for classic reflections.
Light Options
- Sunrise: Pastel bands, fog chances in cooler months.
- Reverse Sunset: Backlight with sky glow; great for long exposures.
- Blue Hour: Minimalism and moody water texture.
Go / No-Go Thresholds
- Wind: < 10 km/h for clean reflections (0–6 km/h ideal).
- Cloud: Mid/high cloud ≤ 40% for astro; sunrise pastels 20–60% mid/high.
- Tide: Any; glassiest on neap tides or slack periods.
- Moon: 0–30% illumination for early Milky Way contrast (Feb–Jul).
- Safety: Mud/slick edges; variable depth; keep noise low near residences.
Quick Planning
- Access: Weyba Rd boat ramp (check signage; respect residents).
- Tide & Wind: Light winds = mirror reflections; watch ripples.
- Mozzies & Midges: Repellent; cover up in warmer months.
- Headlamp: Red light preserves night vision.
Recommended Gear
- Manual camera + sturdy tripod.
- 14–24 mm, 24–70 mm; optional 70–200 mm.
- Remote/intervalometer, towel, spare batteries.
- 6–10 stop ND for reverse-sunset long exposures.
Technique Cheats
- Milky Way (single): M; f/1.8–2.8; ISO 3200–6400; shutter via 500-rule/NPF; WB 5500 K. Bracket a darker frame for highlights.
- Milky Way (stacked): 10–20 sky frames at lower ISO + separate ground. Align in post. Don’t bump tripod.
- Sunrise Minimalism: f/8–11; ISO 64–200; 0.5–4s with 3–6 stop ND. Symmetry + negative space.
- Reverse Sunset: Face away from sun. Expose for magenta/peach bands; 2–30s with 6–10 stop ND; long focal lengths compress layers.
